Constipation is characterized by inability or difficulty trying to have a bowel moment, and is usually a result of dehydration or lack of fiber. Everyone experiences constipation at some point, and infrequent constipation does not warrant urgent care. Those experiencing constipation should try to alleviate their symptoms by drinking lots of fluids, eating more fiber, and getting regular exercise.

You should call 911 immediately if your constipation is experienced in conjunction with any one of the following:

  • Feeling very weak or sick
  • Vomiting bile (bright yellow or green)
  • Vomiting and the abdomen appears very swollen

You should call an Urgent Care LA doctor for your constipation if you experience:

  • Weight loss greater than 10 pounds without dieting
  • Minor but recurrent bleeding from rectum
  • Unable to have a bowel movement without use of a laxative, suppository, or enema
  • You are taking a new prescription medication
  • You have had less than 3 bowel movements a week or you are straining more than 25% of the time
  • Your constipation is more intense or prolonged than ever before
  • You have intermittent mild abdominal pain and fever
  • Abdomen is swollen
  • You have not had a bowel movement for three days
  • Leaking stool

At Urgent Care LA, our doctors will assess your constipation problems and medical history, and tailor a treatment that is right for you. They will determine if a more serious illness is the cause of your constipation, or if the cause is due to environmental factors.
