High Blood Pressure

High blood pressure, also known as hypertension, in incredibly common in the US. High blood pressure can be very dangerous, as it can cause organ and cardiovascular damage without any symptoms, and so blood pressure should be checked regularly, especially in adults over the age of 40, or those with a medical history of high blood pressure, high cholesterol, kidney disease, adrenal gland tumors, coarctation of the aorta, pregnancy, alcohol abuse, or thyroid dysfunction, as these are known causes of secondary hypertension.

Sometimes, high blood pressure can occur without any association illnesses. This is known as primary hypertension. Though high blood pressure usually has no symptoms, severe high blood pressure often causes headaches, vision problems, lightheadedness, nausea, and vomiting. In this case, urgent care should be sought immediately.

In the case of secondary hypertension, the underlying cause of the high blood pressure is treated. In the case of primary hypertension, high blood pressure can be lowered with diet, exercise, and weight loss (if necessary). Medications may sometimes be prescribed.
